Time Flies Like an Arrow

Jan 31, 2008 | Lucas

You have no idea what I am about to talk about (unless you've read this post before, in which case it doesn't count). The first thing that most likely came to your mind was: "Lucas is going to tell me how time passes by really fast so we should seize opportunities as they arise" or something to that extent. If you thought that, you are completely wrong. I don't intend on restating the obvious, you can figure that out on your own. What I plan to do is shed some new perspective on ideas and concepts, or in this case, a cliché phrase.

What could I possibly mean by that? Think about the sentence "time flies like an arrow". Is it ambiguous in any way, or is the meaning pretty clear? An extensive survey I conducted returned staggering results!

Time Flies Like An Arrow

I can assure you that according to my survey, the general public is wrong. The phrase "time flies like an arrow" is much more ambiguous than you think. Let's analyze!

"Time flies like an arrow"

  1. Time flies in the same way as an arrow flies.
  2. Time flies in the same way you would time an arrow.
  3. Time flies like an arrow would time them.
  4. Time flies that are like an arrow.
  5. "Time Flies" (a type of flies) enjoy a single, specific arrow.
  6. "Time Flies" (a type of flies) enjoy an arrow.
  7. Time (the magazine) flies like an arrow flies.

Wow. You didn't expect that, did you.
