The Milk-Cereal Dilemma

Jan 30, 2008 | Lucas

I tend to consider myself at least average, if not above average in my ability to choose a good ratio of milk with my breakfast cereal. Over the years and through much experience I have learned how much I am capable of eating at a certain time so that I rarely ever have anything left over. However, today my milk-cereal rationalizing ability had been challenged!

Normally I would pour in some cereal into a bowl, and then pour in enough milk so that it was visible, but didn't cover the cereal (I find that this is the optimal amount of milk for most types of cereal). That way I had full control over how much cereal I would eat.

The problem today was that I had to pour in the milk first so that I could heat it up in the microwave. I don't usually do this as I like to eat my cereal with cold milk, but because of my sore throat I figured that warming it up would be in my best interest.

That raised some pertinent issues though. How much milk should I pour in? What if it's not enough? What if it's too much? The milk-cereal dilemma was looming over me as I pondered these questions.

Thinking from an economic perspective, I decided to pour in the milk conservatively, knowing that my marginal benefit of consuming it would be greater that way.

Needless to say, I enjoyed my breakfast this morning by successfully averting the milk-cereal dilemma, but I will never again take my cereal preparing skills for granted.
