Recently there has been quite a lot of talk about climate change. The media is booming about the morbid effects of global. Politicians are being elected into office just through the use of terms in their speeches and debates. So I figure, in order to establish myself amongst the ranks of these valiant, selfless heroes of society, I should say something about global warming too. Thus, I have come up with my own list of simple ways each and every one of us can make a difference and reduce our carbon footprint.
- Shower Less Often
- How often do you shower? Once a day? Twice a day? Think of all the water you are wasting! In the middle ages, people showered only on special occasions - and even then, they were concious of their water consumption.
- Become a Couch Potato
- The more exercise we get, the larger our lung capacity gets, which increases the amount oxygen we breathe in, and thus we breathe out more carbon dioxide gas! This also leads to my sub-suggestion of breathing less. Reducing breathing frequency by 50% would reduce the amount of carbon dioxide our bodies by an equivalent amount.
- Sleep More
- People breathe less when they sleep and thus release less carbon dioxide. By increasing the amount of sleep we get, we would become healthier individuals and save the planet at the same time. Talk about killing two birds with one stone!
- Don't Eat Beans
- It has been scientifically proven that beans induce flatulence in humans. Flatulence contains a large amount of CH4, which is a greenhouse gas far worse than carbon dioxide. Go eat a tomato instead.
- Install "Greenbook" on Facebook
- Because adding some random application on a social networking site will really help reduce global warming...?
- Stop Drinking Carbonated Beverages
- What do carbonated beverages contain? Carbon dioxide! Large multi-national companies like Coca Cola and Pepsi are secretly plotting the destruction of the world by carbonating their beverages and then spreading them across the entire world like the bubonic plague.
- Drive at 90km/h
- Have you ever noticed that the gas mileage for cars is lower for highway driving than city driving? That's because most engines are designed to be most efficient at 90km/h. The 50km/h speed limits in cities are silly and should be disregarded in the name of humanity. You'll use less gas, release fewer emissions and get to where you want to go faster!
- Support Turkish Hacking Groups
- Servers are computers that are always on. Most datacenters have hundreds or thousands of machines up, so you can imagine how much power they consume. If a hacker could gain access to a system, he could initialize a simple UNIX shutdown command to turn off the computer, essentially reducing our global power consumption.
Unlike many other suggestions, these tips offer a practical approach to curbing our own destruction due to global warming. Not everyone has enough money to buy a hybrid car, install solar panels on their roof, or donate exuberant amounts to research for alternative fuel technology, but I'm sure everyone can take these eight points and apply them to their lives, contributing to the greater benefit of society.
